Stadium Entrance Project
Home of the Minersville Area Battlin’ Miners
The Minersville Area Alumni Association is an organization that was started approximately two years ago and was founded to promote social events for alumni and fundraising activities for projects for the Minersville Area School District.  Our present “Big” project is to raise money for construction of a new entrance to Veteran’s Stadium – the Home of the Minersville Area Battlin’ Miners.

The new entrance would be a two-column brick structure that would house the two ticket booths.  On top of each booth would be a four-foot concrete miner statue with lantern.  (View the the exact miner statue). These will be the same type of statues that were donated by the Minersville Area Class of 2009 that are located at the entrance to the district office and junior-senior high school.  The estimated cost for the purchase of two new statues from Patterson Block Company with lanterns is app. $400.00.  The lanterns will be illuminated for evening events at the stadium and will light the entrance as well as the lights inside the ticket booths.  On the outside (West side) of the South side column will be a new dedication sign to the heroic dead who gave their lives in defense of our country that matches the one presently located on the South side of the fence located on North Fifth Street across from the elementary center.  (View copy of the dedication text.)  On the outside (West side) of the North column will be either an image of a “Battlin’ Miner Helmet or the image of a Battlin’ Miner Football Player.  On the east side of one of the columns (facing the inside of the stadium) will have a plaque in memory of Billy Ulmer.  The plaque will read:

OUR OWN

BILLY ULMER

IT WAS HIS LAST GAME

AND HIS GREATEST GAME.

HE GAVE EVERYTHING HE HAD

AND LOST EVERYTHING.

MAY GOD PRESERVE HIS MEMORY

WITH US FOREVER, SO THAT FUTURE

YOUTH MAY KNOW HIS GREATNESS.

BILLY ULMER, AN EXCEPTIONALLY

TALENTED ATHLETE, DIED IN THE

MINERSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL STADIUM

AS A RESULT OF AN INJURY SUSTAINED

DURING A FOOTBALL CONTEST ON

OCTOBER 22, 1943

The top of the entrance will have an archway and sign adjoining the two columns that read: VETERANS MEMORIAL STADIUM – HOME OF THE BATTLIN’ MINERS.  (View the colored sketch drawn by Miss Jenna Lescavage of the Minersville Area Class of 2007.)  The sketch is not drawn to scale.  The new entrance will be located on the “home side entrance of the stands” on Stadium Road off of North Fifth Street.  If enough money is raised, a second replica entrance will be added to the visitors’ side entrance adjacent to the parking lot.  The money for this project will be raised by a number of activities including donations from businesses and organizations, private person donations, raffles and other special fund-raising events.
