Cass Township
The Primrose School house was erected betore the formation of Cass Townshlp in 1848. Abadoned houses and colliery buildings were used for school purposes.
The first school house erected in Cass Township was at Heckschersville a stone building where the Ed O'Connor and Anna Courtney homes now stand. The first teacher was Joseph Perso. First board of school directors in Cass Township were Andrew and Robert Patton, William Cooks, John Kennedy, Peter Fitzpatrick and John Delaney. They held their meetings in McDonalds Cafe in Coal Castle. The school term was ten months and the salary was $28 per month. In 1835 the salaries were increased to $35 monthly. Joseph Knowles was the first teacher in Cass Township, teaching at Primrose. A Mr. Thomas taught at Woodside in a company house. Michael Connelly taught at Jonestown in an engine house. Mr. Holt taught at Heckschersville in a church in front of Frank O'Connor's home. Sometime later a Master McGuire taught in Heckscherville and Woodside. Mr. Terrence taught in old log cabin at Black Valley know Schaffers Hill). Library societies were organized at Forestville and Jonestown end weekly institutes were held annually. In 1865 a stone school building was built in Forestville. This was used for school purposes until 1921 where a new ten room building was built. In 1866 a school was built at York Tunnel and was in use until 1921. |
